Arts Strengthened in Standards For Teacher Preparation Programs

The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing adopted new program standards for the Multiple Subject Teaching Credential to go into effect in 2003. The new program standards are closely aligned with state-adopted content standards for students; as a consequence, they strengthen the visual and performing arts in the K-8 classroom. Creative Collaborations: Teachers and Artists in the Classroom, Pre-K through Grade 12

Published by CAAE and the San Bernardino City Unified School District.
This new publication provides a framework for effective collaboration between artists and teachers, for the benefit of their students. The focus is on the student, the teacher and the artist and what each brings to the learning environment in terms of expertise, responsibility and commitment. This book is an invitation to teachers and artists to work in a new way. Through collaboration, mutual teaching and learning, teachers and artists may uncover a rich opportunity to develop a discussion between two people who have a shared agenda, the development of children, but who typically work within different frameworks. National Board Certification for Arts Teachers

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards offers certificates for music and visual arts teachers. The Early and Middle Childhood/Art (EMC/ART) certificate is appropriate for teachers who teach students ages 3 - 12 and the Early Adolescence through Young Adulthood/ Art (EAYA/ART) certificate is appropriate for teachers who teach students ages 11 – 18+. Both certificates are appropriate for teachers who know the making and content of music or the visual arts. It can take up to three years to earn national certification at a cost of $2,300. CA Dept. of Education fee subsidies and other funding sources are available.

Powerful Voices

The Surdna Foundation, established in 1917, serves programs in all art disciplines. Published by Surdna, Powerful Voices is a report comprised of findings from a recent initiative they supported which was geared towards teenagers, many of whom are at-risk. State Directories to Assist With Accessibility

The National Arts and Disability Center (NADC) released the State Resource Directories on ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) Compliance and Technical Assistance. Each state has its own directory that contains listings of organizations and agencies that provide technical assistance regarding the ADA and the Arts. Included in these listings re disability agencies and organizations for creating an access advisory committee for conducting outreach to the disability community. Teaching Artist Journal

The new Teaching Artist Journal (TAJ) provides an ongoing professional development resource to clarify, enrich, and advance teaching artist research and practice. The publication is available as an online and print subscription. True Needs, True Partners

Published in 1998 and 2002 by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, these reports examine the relationship between museums and schools. They provide survey results as well as a sampling of educational programs in a wide variety of museums from art to zoo.
