HIGHLIGHT:
CAPITOL VISITS (L to R) Susan McGreevy-Nichols, co-president CDEA Dr. Lynn Waldorf, Arts Consultant Leslie Johnson, CAAE chair elect Carol DeLuise, CAAE board member Inside the State Capitol |
A highlight of the CAAE Annual Conference is the visits with our state legislators. This year’s visits were timely - only weeks before the state budget “May Revise”. In particular, these visits provided a great opportunity for arts education advocates from throughout the state to highlight the importance and possible impact of the Governor’s proposed arts block grants with specific examples from their own communities. For many conference participants, this was the first time visiting their state legislators. CAAE helped make every visit successful by: scheduling appointments with legislators and their key staff; using the buddy-system for the visits by forming teams of participants; keeping everyone “on message” by preparing four key talking points which were reviewed in advance at the morning session of the conference; and providing advocacy materials in pre-made packets for each team to leave behind. Together we presented a unified voice on the importance of arts education! The experience empowered each of us to be better advocates to key decision-makers at the state and in our own communities. - Leslie Johnson, Director School Programs, Music Center L.A. County
HIGHLIGHT: NETWORKING (L to R) Dana Powell & Nancy Carr, CAAE board members Reception at California Museum of History, Women, and the Arts |
The
networking reception provided a terrific opportunity to listen, learn,
and laugh with our colleagues. It expanded our sense of community, and
set a tone of camaraderie for the legislative visits the following day.
- Dana Powell, Director, Creative Education Program, Cultural Intiatives
Silicon Valley
After a full day of deep discussions, broad overviews and sharing
of ideas that are working, the networking in the informal festive setting
of the reception at the California Museum provided an atmosphere and time
for discussions and sharing of future and further possibilities, ideas,
and thoughts - great close of a full and collaborative arts day.
- Nancy Carr, Visual and Performing Arts Consultant,
California Department of Education
HIGHLIGHT: GUEST SPEAKER Sara
Sackner |
Both keynotes were terrific: entertaining and thought provoking. The student performances (music performance and the dramatic role playing) were inspiring, reminding us why we were there!- conference participant

Sandra
Tsing Loh and Sara Sackner were both great....we laughed, we cried, we

- Mitch Aiken,

HIGHLIGHT: BREAK-OUT SESSIONS (L
to R) |
We're Off to See the Wizard: Legislator Visit Preparation |
I enjoy being an advocate for arts education, particularly theatre. It was a treat to work with three of Sheldon High School's Theatre students to demonstrate the "inappropriate" ways to address legislators and the "rational, informed way." It was great to talk with a legislative assistant who shared her love of being in high school theatre and playing a major role in the play BLITHE SPIRIT.- Gai Jones, Theatre Arts Consultant
