Winding
Down, Gearing Up
Summer is officially underway, traditionally a quiet time for K-12 education.
But this year, difficult discussions about education funding are likely to continue
right through the summer months. And that means arts education advocates are
well advised to stay vigilant and start building a local network now in order
to keep arts education on the agenda come fall.
Here’s what you can do to build
momentum in your corner of California:
- Know the facts. How have arts
programs been affected by recent cuts in your district? Are further
cuts under discussion?
- Who are your allies in advocating for the arts in
your district? Business leaders, artists, parents, politicians and
the leaders of local institutions like museums and performing arts
centers can all be persuasive proponents of the arts. Reach out and
motivate them to join you.
- Work the press. Op eds, personality profiles related
to the arts, and media events that call attention to students’ desire
for arts education in colorful, engaging ways can all keep the issue
in front of your community.
Summer is also a time to renew the creative
juices. Below, you’ll find a wide variety of workshops and other events
to refresh and inspire your creativity. From teaching artists to administrators,
there’s something for everyone. Enjoy your summer!
