Meet Youth Center Elementary Jazz Director - Tom Mitter

This bio is taken from Spotlight Jazz 2017 program.

Over the past 40 years, Tom Mitter's music performance career on saxophone, clarinet, and flute has taken him from the bullfight stadiums of Mexico and the top concert halls of Japan to major jazz clubs across America.  He's had the opportunity to perform with world-class musicians Buddy Collette, Bud Freeman, Albert "Tootie" Heath,  Bruce Forman, and Laurel Masse of the Manhattan Transfer.  He's been a featured performer in concerts at The University of Illinois, Yokohama City Jazz Concerts, and Indiana University East. He's also led bands in steady "house" engagements in San Francisco and Chicago.

Tom has taught music in both public and private schools in Mexico, Chicago, and California. He's had numerous students make the Illinois IMEA and SCSBOA Allstate Honor Bands (both concert and jazz). A flute student of his for 7 years was named the top high school flutist in Illinois. A jazz trumpet student of his was named the number one jazz high sschool trumper play in California. Tom's students have received college scholarships and become professional musicians.
