Arts News February 2015

Two district-wide performances take place this month – both shows are this Saturday in the gymnasium on the LAHS campus.   These district-wide events are a wonderful way to experience the progression of The All-District Band Concert at 2pm features a dozen instrumental groups from LAHS, McAuliffe, Oak, and the combined elementary schools.  The performers include drum line, wind symphonies, and jazz bands.

The All-District Strings Concert takes place at 6pm, featuring orchestra students K-12 from all of the schools,  Both district-wide instrumental concerts benefit from a collaboration with the Los Alamitos Youth Center.

In addition to the All-District concerts, 3rd graders from McGaugh, Hopkinson, and Lee schools have shows this month.

On February 14th from 1-4pm, the 4th District PTA presents the Reflections Gallery at the Orange County Department of Education in Costa Mesa.  The top artworks from all over the county will be on exhibit.  LAUSD students Samantha Paul, Avi Jagdish, Grant Lock, Mylinh Vu, Simon Martin, and Sophia Mendez will be recognized at the Gallery.  Congratulations!

I will be meeting with other arts advocates this week to learn more about how other school districts have used arts in education to improve student outcomes.  I will also look into resources that may be available for our district.
